Lymington II v Eastleigh III – Match Report

Mariners Second Team Launch With A Win

Hampshire Merit 3

Lymington II 33 – 5 Eastleigh III

On saturday Lymington Mariners fielded a second team for the first time in the club’s history. Led by their captain Jack Dovey the team launched itself with a stylish victory over Eastleigh’s third team in their opening game of third Hampshire Merit 3 League campaign.

With all the excitement of making history the Mariners took to the field full of enthusiasm and adrenaline. However a quick early try by Eastleigh swiftly bought minds back to the task in hand. Although the team was made up of new combinations and players the rugby was a delight to watch.

The forwards controlled the set pieces and secured quick ruck ball relentlessly. The backs were dynamic and continually crossed the gain line with strong running.

Mariners took the lead when Lymington’s youngest recruit 17-year-old Aaron Lopez scored with an excellently taken try on the wing. Scrum half and man of the match Bruno Brods scored the conversion. A second try came via the other winger Pete Rolfe, running beneath the posts to set up a 14-5 interval lead.

In the second half Lymington continued their dominance, running in three more tries, two by full back Craig Esterhuizen with deft deployment of the dummy and one by centre Mark Etheridge with two converted the final score was 33-5
