DOMINATION COUNTS FOR NOTHING FOR MARINERS II
Fareham Heathens III 40 – 20 Lymington Mariners II
Lymington Mariners second XV lost away from home to Fareham Heathens in a Merit 3 fixture.
Mariners started well when Ben Mansbridge at centre opened the game with a dazzling try. Full-back Craig Esterhuizen with some quick thinking and even quicker feet ran a penalty from his own 22 yard line to get within sniffing distance of the Fareham line before a last gasp tackle denied him the score. Fortunately captain Jack Dovey was on hand for the off-load to touch down.
The forwards dominated the battle up front but the more organised Fareham back-line made the most of their possession running in three tries before half-time.
The second half went much the same way as the first with the Mariner pack winning possession and territory but the Fareham backs executing their moves more effectively. Rising star young Aaron Lopez scored his second try in two games with a darting run up with wing. Lymington then conceded three more tries as Fareham sealed the result.
There was still time however for the most memorable try of the day to be scored by man mountain Stuart Harvey. Collecting the ball on the opposition 22, Stuart steamrolled through the opposition and crossing the whitewash with most of the Fareham pack still clinging desperately to him. Chris Baker came close in the final minutes after catching a high clearance quick – the shock he suffered from not dropping it possibly being his un-doing.
